Fire crews were called to Bayley Lane Kitchen shortly before 8am this morning
A fire has ripped through a top city restaurant after an early morning blaze.
Fire crews were called to Bayley Lane Kitchen and Cocktails shortly before 8am this morning.
Crews arrived at the scene in just two minutes and found the restaurant to be well alight.
At the height of the blaze, 25 firefighters were involved.
It is thought to have started in an extractor fan in the kitchen, but spread to other floors.
A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “We were called at 7.47am this morning to a three storey building on fire.
“The first call we received said it was a restaurant on fire and when crews got there, they confirmed it was Bayley Lane restaurant which was alight.
“It is thought the fire started in an extraction unit in the kitchen on the ground floor, but has spread to the floor above.
“25 firefighters and four fire engines attended the scene and tackled the blaze.
“There was a severe amount of smoke coming from the upper floor, so firefighters cut open floorboards to access any hot spots.
“This meant that they could stop any further smoke or fire spreading to another part of the building.”
A cordon was put in place around Bayley Lane as they tackled the fire.
Ten per cent of the building has been affected, and there is smoke damage to all floors.
The fire did spread to Genesis Employment which is in the same building but it was swiftly dealt with by firefighters and was contained.
Watch commander Ian Hay from Binley fire station said: “We were notified by the fire detection system in the building.
“The fire in the extraction unit in the restaurant kitchen area was extinguished.
“It was a slow burning fire and burned through into the first floor area of the building to Genesis Employment.
“The fire was brought under control though there was some smoke damage to all floors.
“The fire was contained to the kitchen and first floor area.”
